Notes From the Road – Issue 34: Comparison Shopping

Ok! Thoughts on this interesting head to head. This weekend I put another hour of combined seat time into both the Gravity and the Cayenne.

I think if the Gravity drove like the Cayenne and had software like the Rivian I’d switch, or if the Cayenne had a third row it might be tempting.

The Rivian strikes an interesting balance. The Gravity third row is MASSIVE, but somehow the car is actually SMALLER than the Rivian, yet even with rear steering it doesn’t FEEL smaller than the Rivian somehow and I don’t love the way it drives. Plus the software is more legacy auto than Rivian/Tesla.

The Cayenne, on the other hand, is PURE driving experience. It’s not BAD from a practicality standpoint, but it’s basically Model Y sized, or actually in between a 5 seat X and a Y actually.

The R1S on the other hand drives pretty well despite being a pretty big truck, and has at least an OK third row. Software is first class. Only Tesla is better (and then only just)

With the Gravity I think Lucid tried to port the Air experience to the SUV, and it didn’t work that well imo. That’s what made me curious about the Cayenne, and if Porsche managed to port the Taycan experience well. Needless to say they really excelled on that. The Cayenne may be BETTER dynamically than the Taycan. That’s pretty impressive. Oddly I found the Rivian actually nicer to drive at normal speeds than the Gravity somehow. It’s hard to explain, but the Gravity “feels” heavy to me, whereas both the Rivian, and especially the Cayenne, hide their weight more effectively. Of course I’m confident the Gravity would be far better “at the limits”than the R1S, but you don’t drive a Rivian “at the limits” anyway. The “limits” for a Rivian are like fording rivers 😅
